Around the world, Switzerland is known for millimeter-precise watches and high-precision sharpened knives. Despite its status as a mecca for sporty and nature-loving cyclists, Switzerland is less well known for its e-bike production. Yet the Swiss company Flyer is one of the European e-bike pioneers with its globally appreciated e-bike range. Click through our Flyer range and get real Swiss engineering at home.
For over 20 years, the Flyer brand has stood for maximum passion in e-bike design. The company with its more than 300 employees is located in the tranquil town of Huttwil in the Swiss canton of Bern. In the "city of flowers", Flyer is not only the largest employer, but also gains its innovative strength for e-bike development there. The company, which was founded in 2001 and was formerly also known as Biketec AG, sells more than 60,000 e-bikes all over the world every year, with exports accounting for around 75 percent. In addition to the entire DACH region, the main markets also include Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Strictly speaking, the starting signal for the success story of the Flyer brand was given in the early 1990s. As early as 1993, founder Philipp Kohlbrenner recognized the newly developing need for mobility and developed a motorized electric bicycle from a vehicle battery and the windshield wiper motor of a truck. Based on this prototype, numerous further developments were made. Finally, the first series model was born in 1995 with the Flyer Classic. In the early 2000s, the e-bikes from the Flyer C series were the first in Europe to use lithium-ion batteries for energy storage. The resulting weight savings and range extension can certainly be called the initial spark for the e-bike market in Europe. To this day, the Flyer brand has remained true to its principles and continues to focus on chic design and innovative technologies. It is not for nothing that the Swiss work closely with technology suppliers such as BOSCH and Panasonic.
When the Swiss company started more than two decades ago, there was not yet much sign of a broad expansion into the bicycle market. Today, Flyer has the right e-bike for almost every taste and requirement.
To help customers and interested parties find their way through the jungle of models, Flyer classifies its e-bikes into four segments. Particularly practical: The manufacturer does without several model designations, but assigns a model series to each category. This makes it easier to get an overview:
"E-Tour": If you want to go on a great voyage of discovery with your bike and efficiently master everyday life, the Flyer E-Tour models from the Gotour series are the perfect choice. The premium perfectionists among the e-bikes score with different frame shapes, high-quality components, a modern design and a seamless integration of the drive train into the bikes.
"E-Urban": The models from the E-Urban segment from Flyer have the beautiful name Upstreet. The bikes are ideal companions for commuting and also cut a good figure. Receiving the "Design & Innovation Award 2018" is proof of the Swiss company's technological and design signature. Whether on the road or on the dirt track - the Flyer Upstreet models are at home everywhere.
"E-Crossover": The models that go by the euphonious name Goroc are true crossover bikes. They combine the best features of comfortable city bikes and grippy mountain bikes. Thanks to full suspension and the possibility to equip the bikes with a dual battery, even long off-road tours without recharging are no problem.
"E-Mountain": Flyer's bike range is completed by the mountain bike model range. With the Uproc models, the name says it all, because thanks to a powerful drive, grippy tires and sporty transmission, amateur athletes fly towards the summit, true to the company name. High-quality frames, biting disc brakes and balanced suspension characteristics ensure at the same time that even the shot ride down into the valley becomes an experience.
