Suspension forks and rear shock for off-road fun
If you want to be fast, efficient and comfortable off-road, you need a suspension fork. Especially in the MTB sector and trekking bikes, forks with large suspension travel are standard. The rule is: the greater the suspension travel, the better the damping. In addition, particularly high-quality suspension forks not only have a locking option for switching off the spring mechanism. Models such as the Fox fork 2018 34 A FLOAT 27.5 even allow you to lock the fork in three positions and thus ideally adapt the suspension travel to the respective conditions on the road. While hardtails only come with a suspension fork, Fully also score with a suspended rear triangle. With versatile adjustable models like the RockShox Monarch RT3 Debon Air shock from RockShox or the RockShox Monarch R rear shock, you can give your bike a performance upgrade to master even the most aggressive trails.
What travel does my suspension fork need?
- 100 mm suspension travel: You want to be as fast as possible on the road or are merely in moderate terrain? Then a suspension travel of about 100 mm is a good choice. Typically, race fullys are equipped with this type of suspension fork.
- 120-140 mm suspension travel: With a suspension travel of 120-140 mm, the focus is clearly more on comfort. Ideal is such a choice for a touring Fully, which they use for longer bike rides in light to medium terrain.
- 140-160 mm suspension travel: This suspension travel is typical for mountain bikes in the all-mountain category. This is a balanced bike constellation that allows you to cope with almost any terrain without the bike being too specific.
- 160-180 mm suspension travel: Suspension forks with a travel of 160-180 mm fall into the enduro category. These bikes are designed to cope with difficult terrain and demanding trails without any problems. However, the fork, if not deactivated, swallows a lot of propulsive energy, especially on the mountain..
- 180-230 mm suspension travel: Probably the largest suspension travel offer forks with 180 - 230 mm travel, as they are common for freeride bikes. With such a fork you are up to any terrain. Even rough root passages and high jumps are no problem here. For long tours on paved roads, however, such suspension forks are suboptimal.
