When it comes to fitness training, most people think of their legs, a broad chest or thick arms. But the abdominal muscles and the lower back are often neglected. With an abdominal and back trainer, this weak point is a thing of the past. But what are the advantages of ab trainers and back trainers? How can the training be intensified? And what are the different types of exercise equipment?

What are the benefits of an abdominal and back trainer?

Admittedly, there are clearly more motivating things to do than exercises for the abdominal muscles and lower back. That doesn't change the fact that this is where modern lifestyles do the most damage. Long periods of sitting and too little exercise cause these essential supporting muscles to atrophy. The result: poor posture, back pain, premature wear and tear of the spine and a generally lower level of athletic performance because the stability in the centre of the body is missing. With a high-quality abdominal and back trainer, however, core training becomes very comfortable. Comfortable padding and adaptive locks for the legs provide maximum stability and thus guarantee effective muscle use. Evasive movements and sloppy technique are a thing of the past. Many ab and back trainers are foldable and disappear almost invisibly behind the door or under the bed after training. At the same time, in contrast to core training with free weights, ab trainers and back trainers are ideal for fitness beginners.

How do I train properly with ab and back trainers?

One of the great advantages of ab trainers and back trainers is that they are beginner-friendly. This is due to the training comfort, the easy-to-learn technique and the guidance through the device, which minimises the risk of injury. What types of abdominal and back trainers are there?

Which ab or back trainer is right for you depends on your own needs. Pure back trainers are designed exclusively for performing trunk bends (so-called hyperextensions). Here, the legs are fixed by a foot pad, while the hips rest on a cushion. Lateral support handles allow comfortable mounting and dismounting. In contrast, there are the abdominal and back trainers. As such, they not only offer training options for the lower back. The corresponding pads and locks are attached in such a way that abdominal exercises such as sit-ups and crunches can also be performed without any problems. Some machines also have additional features such as cable pulls. This allows a greater variety of exercises - also for the lateral torso muscles.

Intensive training with additional weights

Core training with abdominal and back trainers is purely self-weight training. If you want to make your exercises even more intensive to train your six-pack optimally, you can increase the load with additional resistance. Whether with weight plates, weight waistcoats or weight cuffs - ab trainers and back trainers offer all these options. Resistance bands, for example, are also excellent for making sit-ups, crunches or hyperextensions much more intense and thus additionally stimulating muscle growth.
