Gear shift eyes
The derailleur hanger is important for the functioning of the gear shift. It is precisely the point at which the derailleur of a derailleur system is attached to the frame. Every bicycle with derailleur gears therefore also has a derailleur hanger - regardless of whether it is a road bike, mountain bike, gravel bike, touring bike or e-bike.
The derailleur hanger is made of a softer material and acts like a damper, ensuring that the rear derailleur and frame are protected in the event of a fall or if something leans against it. The derailleur hanger itself is easy to replace and costs much less than a rear derailleur or the frame in the event of damage.

When does the derailleur hanger need to be replaced?
After a fall or a strong blow to the rear derailleur, the derailleur hanger can break off directly. Mostly, however, the matter is not so obvious, and the derailleur hanger is only slightly bent. You can tell by the fact that the circuit no longer works correctly and this can no longer be compensated for with the rear derailleur adjustment.
If the rear derailleur can no longer be adjusted correctly, you should first check whether it is still firmly fixed to the derailleur hanger. Check the large fastening screw on the side of the rear derailleur, with which it is screwed to the derailleur hanger. If the derailleur hanger can no longer be straightened, or if it breaks off during straightening, you can simply remove the derailleur hanger. If you loosen these screws, the derailleur hanger (or the part that still sits on the dropout) falls easily into your hand. Conversely, a new derailleur hanger can be simply screwed on again. However, you have to find the right derailleur hanger.
Which derailleur hanger do I need?
If you need a new derailleur hanger, you must know exactly which model it is. Unfortunately, there is no standard and no fixed specifications on the shape and attachment of the derailleur hanger. This means that there are many different models, even within one manufacturer. Even within one bike model, the derailleur hanger can vary depending on the model year of the frame. If you're lucky, the derailleur hanger you need to replace will have a number or code on it. Otherwise, take the old derailleur hanger as a "template", it can serve you well in the search for a new one as a match.
