Buying an e-bike: the essentials at a glance

• What is an e-bike?
  An e-bike is any bicycle fitted with an electric motor. Thanks to the motor support, you need less muscle power while riding. So if longer distances and climbs have been a struggle for you so far, you'll master them with ease from now on!

• How fast are you allowed to ride your e-bike?
  The top speed for e-bikes in Austria is 25 km/h. There are also faster e-bikes – so-called S-pedelecs – which may be ridden at up to 45 km/h. Legally, however, these no longer count as bicycles but as mopeds. What you definitely need to know in that case: to ride an S-pedelec you need a registration, insurance cover and a driving licence.

• What does a good e-bike cost?
  If you want to buy an e-bike, you'll quickly notice that electric bikes are available in every price range. Depending on the manufacturer, model and equipment, costs can vary considerably. You can, however, get a good e-bike from around €2,000.

• What are the advantages of an e-bike?

Torque and motor position

One thing is certain: the motor is the heart of an electric bicycle. When buying an e-bike, pay attention to these motor characteristics:

• Torque: depending on the kind of routes you want to use your future e-bike for, a specific amount of torque (measured in newton metres, Nm for short) is required. On flat routes, motors with 60 Nm of torque are sufficient. On steeper terrain, however, a motor with 80 Nm of torque is advisable.

• Motor position: e-bikes are available with front, mid or rear motors. By now, though, the mid-mounted motor has become standard on almost all e-bikes. It sits at the pedals and has the big advantage of keeping the bike's centre of gravity low and central. E-bikes with hub drives, i.e. front or rear motors, have the advantage of being lighter.

Battery capacity

Alongside the motor, the battery is of course also a very important decision criterion when buying an e-bike. What matters most here is the battery capacity in watt hours (Wh). As a rule of thumb: the higher the number of watt hours, the greater the e-bike's range. In other words: the higher the battery capacity, the longer the distances you can cover on the electric bike. Here's a rough guide:

• For flat routes, a smaller battery (e.g. 420 Wh) is usually completely sufficient.

• For climbs (uphill) and longer rides, a larger battery (e.g. 750 Wh) is an advantage.

Wheel size

Depending on the intended use, you should also pay attention to the wheel size (given in inches) when buying an e-bike. In our online shop you can choose between 27.5 inches and 29 inches. The rule here: the larger the wheel diameter, the greater the riding stability. Here are a few differences at a glance:

• 27.5-inch wheels allow agile handling and are also suitable for small frames.

• 29-inch wheels stand out with extremely stable steering, excellent roll-over characteristics and maximum comfort on rough terrain.

Frame size and frame shape

For maximum riding fun with your future e-bike, you shouldn't neglect frame size and frame shape either. The optimal frame size always depends on your personal height, inseam length and arm length.
