Treadmills - with us you find the right treadmill

Running at home like on the forest trail? With the right treadmill, that's definitely possible, because treadmills offer quick and easy workouts in the comfort of your own home. Equipped with different training programs and adjustable incline, treadmills are perfect for simulating altitude and interval training. This guide reveals why the treadmill is such an excellent piece of exercise equipment and what runners should look for when buying one.

What are the advantages of a treadmill?

Bicycle trainers or cross trainers are often used in rehabilitation training precisely because they are so easy on the joints. A treadmill works differently here, because basically treadmills simulate the natural running movement. The motor sequence here not only puts strain on the muscles, but also on the joints. Every step in the running workout puts a strain on the ankles, knees, hips and spine. For trained people this is not a problem, even proves to be very useful for marathon, soccer or other sports. Because from the load on the treadmill grows more resistant joints, which can cope with other challenges. Treadmills perfectly recreate the running training and the versatile demands on the whole body. Not only legs, but also upper body, shoulders and of course the cardiovascular system are trained. Accordingly, this form of training burns many calories and provides the best support for muscle building.

What do I have to consider when buying a treadmill?

  • Treadmills differ in various aspects. Depending on the demands and requirements of the training, these are more or less decisive in the purchase decision.

  • The maximum weight is a hard limit and should definitely be considered. More robust (and heavier) devices can also withstand more weight on the running surface - but these are not quite as easy to move and need their own space.

  • Treadmills are powered by the motors inside. As a rule, the long-lasting AC motors are the better choice, but that's why they are also incomparably more expensive. Treadmills in studio quality usually rely on these AC motors, devices for beginners* often use DC current. For regular home use, a DC motor is also more than viable. The decisive factor for mileage is the horsepower rating anyway. Here, too, you should realistically assess how much performance I really need before buying.

  • The running surface is also a decisive purchase criterion, because this must ultimately provide enough space for the stride length. Longer and faster runners take longer strides and need a correspondingly larger running surface (150 x 50 cm and up). Width is also crucial to avoid making the run too narrow, which can creep in as an unnatural running style. Larger is safer and more comfortable here, but of course needs more space. If there is little space in the living room or fitness room, a foldable treadmill which is also equipped with transport wheels is suitable.

  • Many treadmills also offer built-in cushioning. This cushions the otherwise hard tread somewhat and this has two effects: Running is more like on a forest and field path than on asphalt and the noise level is somewhat reduced. However, a treadmill is never completely silent, since every step triggers a certain vibration.

  • Finally, the electronics also play an important role in the purchase for many runners. Setting different programs, connecting a smartphone or smartwatch and a large LCD display are directly at the interface between functionality and comfort. A certain variety of programs makes running more exciting and motivating in the long run.

How expensive is a treadmill?

A good treadmill for home use has long been available for well under 1,000 euros. Seasonal bargains and discontinued models are ideal for beginners and ambitious athletes alike. However, they often have to make concessions in terms of mileage, tread length and additional electronic functions. In the upper price ranges, prices between 2,000 and 3,000 euros are the norm and by no means the upper limit. For this, runners get a more robust finish, more cushioning and many additional functions.

Motor power - what should I look out for?

In order to be able to perform a healthy and varied running workout at home, a treadmill needs an appropriate motor power. Values are given in peak and continuous power, whereby the continuous power is much more meaningful - because the continuous power indicates how much speed a treadmill can give over the entire unit. Absolute values are difficult to give as a recommendation, since demands, weight and training level differ greatly depending on the runner*. However, a treadmill should have at least 2 HP, better 3 HP motor power.

Step by step better running training - with the right treadmill

Most runners prefer running outdoors to training at home. However, it is not always possible to train so freely. The running surface of the treadmill at home can be much more than just a stopgap - treadmills offer dynamic and challenging training under controlled conditions, regardless of wind and weather. And because running is dynamic and demanding at the same time, a treadmill is a versatile tool for more muscle and less body fat.
