Ergometer

Ergometer - the fitness equipment for professional demands

Probably no piece of training equipment is as synonymous with endurance training in the gym or living room as the ergometer. The bike trainer allows you to cycle relaxed on the side or to complete sweaty spinning units at full intensity.
The bike trainer is therefore ideal for beginners, but is also used by athletes to stay fit regardless of road conditions.

What is the difference between exercise bikes and ergometers?

It should hardly come as a surprise that ergometers and exercise bikes are often used as synonyms. After all, from a purely external point of view, both fitness machines seem to be alike. But the difference is under the hood. Ergometers fall under a different standard (DIN 32932), which regulates the accuracy of the display. The resistance display must be regulated in watts, finely adjustable and calibrated. Exercise bikes are devices with rather soft setting limits and reduced functions, perfect for beginners. Ergometers, on the other hand, are machines that meet professional standards. In rehabilitation centers, large sports studios, clubs and among ambitious hobby athletes, ergometers are the most common type of equipment. The continuous adjustment of the resistance in the ergometer is made possible by an infinitely variable magnetic brake. This electronic magnetic resistance changes depending on the cadence to ensure a uniform wattage.

Who are ergometers suitable for?

An ergometer is perfect for simply staying fit in the comfort of your own home. The ergometer is popular with beginners and professionals alike because it offers a precise and athletic workout. Whether in rehab training, as preparation for a long bike ride, to lose a few pounds or simply as a fitness device - with our advice and selection, everyone will find the right ergometer.

The difference between an ergometer and an exercise bike also directly determines for whom ergometers are better suited: Those who really want to train professionally and need a constant performance comparison should definitely buy an ergometer. Of course, the purchase price is correspondingly higher than for a comparable exercise bike. But the possibilities to train permanently with an ergometer are much more comprehensive. Performance-oriented training and fitness at a high level are equally made possible by an ergometer.

What types of ergometers are available?

Basically, there are two different types of ergometers: the recumbent ergometer and the bicycle ergometer. The bicycle ergometer is a standing bicycle in the classical sense and resembles in position and arrangement a real bicycle. Recumbent ergometers, on the other hand, allow for more relaxed cycling due to the reclined seat. With or without a recline, the more forward-mounted pedals and relaxed posture allow precise work without pressure on the lower vertebrae. This is extremely important if you have pre-existing spinal disc conditions or are overweight, but at the same time, exercising on a recumbent bike is just as efficient as exercising on an ergometer.

What should I look for when buying an ergometer?

The most important point is the load limit of the ergometer, because not every model can carry the same amount of weight. Lighter ergometers in particular are usually less suitable for heavier exercisers. This is a matter of personal safety. Advanced users should also make sure that the resistance is adequate, so that even after months of training, they can still enjoy challenging sprints at home or in the gym. In addition, the saddle, seat and, if necessary, handlebars should be adjustable if desired. Different training programs, an integrated heart rate monitor or connection to Bluetooth accessories (chest straps or smartwatches) is also an absolute must for many exercisers today. This not only makes it easier to monitor the workout, but also to dose it better. Ergonomics should not be neglected either, so that the body still feels relaxed and free even after long sessions.

Staying fit with the right flywheel mass

As a highly sophisticated bike trainer, an ergometer offers training at a professional level. Even with only a small amount of space, an ergometer is the right choice because it combines precise workouts with watt-precise resistance control and training in the smallest amount of space. Attention should also be paid to the flywheel mass of the ergometer, high flywheel mass guarantees a smooth rotation. The durable quality pleases professionals, but also beginners should not be afraid to invest in their fitness with the purchase of an ergometer.
