Cyclocross / Gravelbikes

More than an indestructible racing machine - cyclocross bikes

As soon as it gets uncomfortable on the roads in the fall, it's time to head off-road. And if you don't want to miss out on the agile handling and snappy acceleration of a road bike, you can opt for a cyclocross bike. It's not without reason that this special form of road bike is becoming increasingly popular again in this country, because what could be better than riding cross-country at breakneck speed?

Cyclocross and gravel bikes - indestructible, sporty limitless

Dirt, gravel, mud, trails and narrow tracks - this is where gravel bikes and cyclocrossers are at home. With their qualities, these sporty bikes are aimed at all dirt riders among cyclists who don't want to stop where the smooth asphalt ends. No wonder cyclocrossers and gravel bikes have become increasingly popular in recent years. With us you can find out which bike suits them best.

Gravelbikes - Boundless sporty on the road

If you want to be on the road as well as off-road, you have found an ideal companion in the gravel bike. Formerly no more than a niche product, the hybrid of road bike and mountain bike has developed into a genuine trend sports device. The Gravelbike combines the best of both worlds, which means that it is suitable for both road and off-road use and that sporting ambitions do not have to take a back seat. Whether asphalt, unpaved gravel roads, forest paths or even narrow trails. With the Gravelbike you enjoy boundless freedom. For long relaxed bike tours without route restrictions, Gravelbikes are thus made for. But also for sporty commuters who do not want to buy more than one bike, the Gravelbike is the right racing machine.

What makes a gravel bike so special?

On the surface, gravel bikes from Kross, Cube, Scott, Giant, Focus or BMC look like rugged road bikes. In fact, comparatively narrow tires between 28 mm and 35 mm, the curved handlebars, low weight, a stiff frame and a crisp shifting group provide a real racing bike feeling. Agility and speed are unparalleled, especially in comparison with mountain bikes. At the same time, biting disc brakes ensure that you come to a safe stop even in steep passages and in wet conditions. The seating position is somewhat more upright due to the less aggressive frame geometry, which increases riding comfort on longer tours and provides more control in the terrain. Unlike the mountain bike, the gravel bike does not have suspension. This reduces the overall weight and provides more efficient propulsion. Some models are even explicitly designed as touring bikes or randonneurs with attached mudguards and saddlebag mounts.

Cyclocrosser - Can it be a little sportier?

Cyclocrossers (also: crossers) have their origins in cycling. To be precise, from the discipline of cross-country cycling (cyclocross or CX). This delightful cycling sport traditionally takes place in winter on closed-off tracks in meadows when, thanks to lousy weather, road cycling is at rest. Cyclocrossers are slightly adapted road bikes, which as real racing machines have a much sportier touch than gavel bikes. Compared to the classic road bike, the cyclocross bike has a reinforced frame with an adapted frame geometry. While the shorter wheelbase provides more agility off the road, the flattened top tube and modified cable routing make it easier to shoulder the bike over obstacles. The seating position is also more upright compared to the road bike, but still sportier than the gravel bike. Profiled lugged tires guarantee good traction on soft slopes at the same time. For more demanding terrain and narrow trails, however, the gravel bike is the better alternative due to wider tires.

The main features of crossers

  • Unlike the mountain bike, no existing suspension fork
  • Wider, chunky tires between 32 mm and 35 mm
  • Curved road handlebars for different seating positions
  • Mostly mounted 2-speed crank with a gradation of 46/36, 44/34 or 42/32
  • Less susceptible to punctures compared to road bikes
  • Hydraulic disc brakes
  • Sporty and compact riding position due to short top tube and head tube.

At a glance: Which bike is right for me?

If you want to ride not only on the road, but also on light off-road terrain without giving up the road bike feeling, you have the choice between a gravel bike and a cyclocross bike. But which bike suits you best? After all, at first glance, both are fast and light. In short, the cyclocross bike is the specialist for maximum speed and high agility on loose and muddy surfaces. Sand, meadow and forest soils are the optimal environment for the compact racers. Those who value maximum speed and want to race are best served with the crosser. But the crosser has also proven itself as a commuter bike suitable for winter use in road traffic or for winter training in salt, snow and ice. The gravel bike, on the other hand, is aimed at cyclists who want to enjoy maximum freedom. Anyone who not only wants to be as comfortable as possible, but also wants to ride away from paved forest paths, for example on easier trails, can reach for the gravel bike without hesitation. The all-rounders are also predestined for long tours or cycling vacations with light luggage thanks to the combination of high comfort and fast progress.

Riding fun is not a question of budget

Even in the entry-level segment, you can expect to find gravel and cyclocross bikes with grippy disc brakes, robust groupsets such as Shimano's Sora and high-quality aluminum frames, some of which are even equipped with featherweight carbon forks. Ideal, therefore, for commuters and recreational athletes who do not want to expose their good road bike to wind and weather during winter training. Ambitious recreational athletes with competition ambitions go straight for the mid-range. Here, even more carbon, even lighter wheels and exciting features such as feather-light single cranks await. But also ambitious competitive athletes and cyclocross professionals will find in our store in search of their next racing machine.
