Exercise bike - the perfect introduction to the world of fitness

If you want to keep fit at home at a reasonable price and don't have much space, an exercise bike is the ideal choice. It's no wonder that exercise bikes have remained the most popular piece of home fitness equipment since their emergence in the 1970s. But what exactly are the benefits of exercise bikes? What is the difference between them and higher-priced ergometers? And what criteria should you look for when buying?

Almost anyone can ride a bike on an exercise bike. And that's exactly the big plus point of exercise bikes, because training is thus accessible to everyone. Simply sit on the bike, pedal and do something for fitness. All without having to read long instruction manuals, perform great warm-up rituals or struggle through complex training programs. In addition, exercise bikes offer a workout that is particularly easy on the joints, especially compared to the classic jog.

At the same time, the cardiovascular system and the muscles are effectively trained. And not only regardless of wind and weather, but also in front of the TV if desired. This keeps you motivated to train even during the cold, wet winter months. Another plus: Compared to other sports equipment, exercise bikes take up very little space. This makes them the ideal fitness equipment even in small apartments.

What is the difference between an exercise bike and an ergometer?

The exercise bike is an inexpensive piece of exercise equipment that is reduced to its basic functions. Home trainers are limited to what is really important - the workout itself. In return, they do without gimmicks and technical frills. This means that even beginners and people with little technical knowledge can use the exercise bikes quickly and easily. The ergometer, on the other hand, is equipped with considerably more technology. This includes, for example, a training computer that scores with an extensive repertoire of adjustable training programs and resistance levels. However, the main technical difference between ergometers and exercise bikes lies in the resistance setting. While the resistance of ergometers can be adjusted continuously to the exact watt, the resistance of exercise bikes can be adjusted in steps without specifying the exact watt. However, this is no obstacle for basic fitness training at home.

What should I look for in an exercise bike in terms of ergonomics?

If you want to train effectively and healthily, you should include the adjustment options of the exercise bike in your purchase decision. Only with numerous adjustment options is it ensured that the exercise bike can be ergonomically adjusted to its user. Ideally, the saddle is not only height-adjustable, but can also be adjusted horizontally and in its inclination. If a training computer is available, it should also be tiltable for optimal readability. In addition, a low step-in makes it easier for seniors to get on and off the bike. Those who prefer to exercise can do without it.

How much space does an exercise bike need?

The amount of space available in your own home is one of the most important decision-making criteria. As a rule, a footprint of approx. 100 cm x 70 cm must be planned. In addition, there should be at least one meter of space on all sides at the installation site. The installation dimensions can be found in the product description of each exercise bike. If you have particularly little space, you can also use folding models or mini exercise bikes. Both types of models can be stowed away after use to save space.

What kind of braking system do exercise bikes have?

Exercise bikes usually have two different braking systems. On the one hand, the so-called shoe brake system. Here, the flywheel / flywheel mass is braked with brake shoes, just like on a classic bicycle. A brake felt is often used for this purpose. The advantage: The procedure for generating the pedaling resistance is relatively quiet. In addition, such devices are comparatively inexpensive. Exercise bikes with magnetic braking systems are somewhat more expensive. Here, a permanent magnet brakes the flywheel. Even though exercise bikes with magnetic brakes are somewhat more expensive, they score points for their lack of material wear.

What else is important on an exercise bike?

Safe training is only possible on a stable exercise bike. Who wants to train on a tippy exercise bike? When buying an exercise bike, pay attention to the maximum user weight and the flywheel's flywheel mass (kg). A high flywheel mass guarantees smooth running. Some devices also offer adjustable feet to compensate for slight unevenness of the floor.
