A fall can happen quickly. Who there when cycling the hairstyle is more important than your own head - quickly has a problem. After all, the bones of the skull and brain are much more sensitive than you think. Today, there is no reason to do without head protection. The days of uncool "lids" are long gone. Whether for road cyclists, mountain bikers or kids - with us you can choose between several well-known brands from Oakley to Cube.
A large proportion of all injuries in bicycle accidents are head injuries. So it's no surprise that a study by the Ministries of Transport in Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia concluded that up to 80 percent of these injuries could be prevented by wearing a helmet.
A high-quality bicycle helmet protects the head like a hard shell protects a soft core. As a result, the helmet absorbs a large part of the impact energy. This applies both to the inner shell, which even breaks in heavy falls, and to the smooth outer shell.
In modern helmets, the outer shell is deliberately designed to be smooth. This allows it to glide over the asphalt in the event of a fall, thus neutralizing further energy that now no longer acts on the head and cervical spine. So a good bike helmet acts much like a car's crumple zone.
Thanks to cool designs, bicycle helmets have long since lost their boring image. Instead, they are as much a part of the look when biking as the bike shirt. Whether classic in black or white or strikingly colorful - that is up to your individual taste. Manufacturers such as Smith, Cube, Oakley, Giro, Fox and Co. go but not only visually with the times. The range is also wide in terms of technology.
If you are not only interested in an eye-catching look and optimum protection for your head, you can opt for a model with an aerodynamic design. Triathletes and road cyclists not only save time on long distances, but also look pretty stylish. And because smart heads today wear a helmet from a young age, you will also find a large selection of brand helmets for kids.
The nicest bike helmet is of little use if it doesn't protect the head properly. And that's exactly what a helmet can only do if it fits its wearer. Make sure you pay attention to two decision criteria:
Helmet type: Helmets have different properties. While a city helmet is the all-rounder for city traffic, often equipped with reflectors, the touring helmet scores with a low weight and high wearing comfort for many hours. A mountain bike helmet, on the other hand, offers a sunshade, more ventilation holes and a more extensively protective helmet shell. Racing helmets, meanwhile, are extremely lightweight, aerodynamic and optimized for optimal visibility in a crouched riding position. A comparatively new type of helmet are special e-bike helmets for S-pedelecs with higher stability and impact absorption.
Helmet size: Probably the most important value for a suitable helmet is the size. This is usually specified by the manufacturers in the classes S, M, L and XL. Some manufacturers also rely on double sizes such as S/M, M/L and L/XL. All you need to determine the right size is the manufacturer's size chart and a tape measure to measure your head circumference.
